Sand Mix Fog Sealer FAQs

1. What is Sand Mix Fog Sealer?

Sand Mix Fog Sealer is a high-performance asphalt pavement maintenance material made from emulsified asphalt, fine aggregate, modifiers and rejuvenating components. It is applied directly to the pavement at room temperature to form a thin, uniform protective surface layer.

Unlike conventional fog seals, the sand-containing formulation also improves surface texture and skid resistance while helping protect aging asphalt pavement.

2. What is Sand Mix Fog Sealer used for?

Sand Mix Fog Sealer is mainly used for preventive maintenance and surface treatment of asphalt pavements, including:

  • Highways
  • Municipal roads
  • Parking lots
  • Driveways
  • Airport pavements
  • Bridges
  • Industrial roads
  • Residential asphalt pavements

It is particularly suitable for asphalt surfaces showing early signs of aging, oxidation, aggregate loss, slight looseness or insufficient asphalt binder.

3. What is the difference between Sand Mix Fog Sealer and conventional fog seal?

A conventional fog seal is generally a diluted asphalt emulsion applied as a thin coating to restore surface appearance and reduce permeability.

Sand Mix Fog Sealer contains fine anti-skid aggregate in addition to the emulsified asphalt binder. The embedded micro-sand helps improve surface texture and friction while replenishing fine aggregate and asphalt binder.

Therefore, it provides both surface protection and skid-resistance enhancement, making it suitable for pavements where a conventional smooth fog seal may not provide sufficient surface texture.

4. Can Sand Mix Fog Sealer be used on old asphalt pavement?

Yes. Sand Mix Fog Sealer is specifically designed for preventive maintenance of aged and slightly deteriorated asphalt pavement.

It can help replenish lost asphalt binder and fine aggregate, improve the appearance of weathered pavement, reduce surface looseness and slow further aging.

5. Does Sand Mix Fog Sealer improve skid resistance?

Yes. One of its key advantages is its anti-skid performance.

The pre-mixed fine aggregate becomes embedded in the surface treatment and increases pavement surface friction. This makes it suitable for areas where both pavement preservation and improved skid resistance are required, such as parking lots, walkways and sloped driveways.

6. Does Sand Mix Fog Sealer require heating?

No. Sand Mix Fog Sealer is a water-based emulsified asphalt material that can be applied at room temperature.

It does not require the heating equipment used for hot-applied asphalt materials, making construction simpler and more convenient.

7. How is Sand Mix Fog Sealer applied?

The general application process is:

Step 1 – Clean the pavement: Remove dust, oil stains, loose aggregate and other contaminants. The surface should be dry and free of loose dust.

Step 2 – Select the application rate: Determine the spraying quantity according to pavement condition.

Step 3 – Apply the sealer: Small areas can be manually applied or scraped, while larger areas can be treated using suitable spraying equipment.

Step 4 – Allow demulsification and curing: Let the coating cure until the pavement surface is dry and no longer tacky.

Step 5 – Open to traffic: Once properly cured, the treated pavement can be reopened to traffic.

8. What spraying equipment is required?

For small areas, Sand Mix Fog Sealer can be applied manually.

For larger pavement areas, a suitable real stone spraying machine or specialized spray vehicle is recommended to achieve more uniform coverage and application thickness.

9. What is the recommended application rate?

The application rate depends on the pavement condition.

For relatively smooth, dense pavement with slight water penetration and minor surface looseness, a single coat of approximately 0.9–1.2 kg/m² is recommended.

For rough, porous, highly water-absorptive or severely loose pavement, a two-coat application can be used:

  • First coat: 0.7–1.0 kg/m²
  • Second coat: 0.5–0.8 kg/m²

The second coat should generally be applied after the first coat has dried, which takes approximately 30 minutes under suitable conditions.

10. How long does Sand Mix Fog Sealer take to cure?

Under suitable conditions, the general curing time is approximately 2–3 hours when the ambient temperature is above 15°C and relative humidity is below 70%.

The actual curing time may vary depending on temperature, humidity, pavement condition, application rate and ventilation. Traffic should only be allowed after the pavement is dry and no longer tacky.

11. What weather conditions are suitable for applying Sand Mix Fog Sealer?

For optimal bonding and curing, the pavement should be clean and dry, and suitable weather conditions should be maintained during and after application.

The product should not be applied when rain is expected shortly after construction. The current product guidance also recommends ambient and pavement temperatures above 10°C (50°F) and rising, and avoiding freezing conditions before the material has fully cured.

12. Can Sand Mix Fog Sealer be applied in rainy weather?

No. The pavement should be dry before application, and construction should be avoided when rain is expected before the sealer has sufficiently cured.

Moisture can interfere with demulsification, bonding and final surface performance.

13. Can Sand Mix Fog Sealer repair potholes and large cracks?

No. Sand Mix Fog Sealer is primarily a surface treatment and preventive maintenance material, rather than a pothole or deep crack repair material.

Potholes and significant cracks should be repaired first using suitable materials such as cold mix asphalt, crack filler or hot melt crack sealant. Sand Mix Fog Sealer can then be applied as a preventive surface treatment where appropriate.

14. Can Sand Mix Fog Sealer help prevent raveling?

Yes. The product is designed to replenish lost asphalt binder and fine aggregate and help reduce surface looseness.

Its fine aggregate and emulsified asphalt system forms a protective surface layer that can help slow raveling and deterioration of aging asphalt pavement.

15. Does Sand Mix Fog Sealer rejuvenate asphalt pavement?

It can help improve the condition of aging pavement by replenishing asphalt binder and incorporating rejuvenating components into the surface treatment.

However, it is primarily a preventive surface maintenance material. Pavements with severe structural deterioration or extensive cracking may require more comprehensive rehabilitation.

16. Is Sand Mix Fog Sealer suitable for parking lots and driveways?

Yes. It is particularly suitable for parking lots, driveways and other asphalt surfaces where both pavement protection and skid resistance are important.

The fine aggregate provides additional surface texture, making the treatment suitable for vehicle and pedestrian areas.

17. Can Sand Mix Fog Sealer be used on highways and airport pavements?

Yes. The product is designed for preventive maintenance of various asphalt pavements, including highways, national and provincial roads, municipal roads, airports and bridges.

For high-speed or high-traffic applications, project-specific evaluation of pavement condition, application rate and traffic management is recommended.
